Create Your Memorable Adventure
If you are wondering what is possible and are new to all of this, we have created several itineraries based on three to seven night packages full of activities and others more relaxed. For more on these possibilities visit our recommendations.
Be Captain of your own adventure as you gently cruise along on your own itinerary. Relax for a few hours or cast out a line and try fishing, tuck into an alfresco lunch onboard, drop anchor and dive in for a swim or moor and stop off to go for a wander in some of the towns and villages you pass by. For those looking for more adventure, what about hiring canoes and bringing them with you to explore the river as you choose.
Re-discover hidden gems on your journey from the luxury of your boat such as the historic town of Athlone with its majestic castle. Motor on past the dramatic 16th century Portumna Castle and Gardens on the shores of Lough Derg and stop off for a wander and explore its visitor centre.
Looking to discover more?
Why not travel further South on the River and cruise around the ‘Holy Island of Lough Derg’ (Inis Cealtra) on its Western shore and take a closer look at this monastic settlement, brimming with history.
From the remnants of the Celts’ potion-making equipment to the Viking raids of the 9th century, the stories of the Holy Island’s past cling to the land. With the ruins of no fewer than six churches on this tiny island, its easy to see where this island got its name. For an expert’s insight, seek out local historian, Ger Madden.
His tours from Mountshannon bring this ancient monastic settlement back to life. And look out for the white-tailed eagles, Saoirse and Caimin and their chicks, who have nested in the area.
