Fishing and or Golfing 5 night North
Route – Banagher to Hodson Bay/ Glasson & return
River Shannon / River Suck & Lough Ree:
Starting out from our base at Banagher , there is plenty to keep you busy while you wait to board your cruiser. Explore the shops and restaurants which are less than a 5 minute walk from the marina, stock up with your provisions before boarding your cruiser by shopping at the local big supermarket and if you want extra fishing equipment call to Ray at the Old Forge, he will provide great fishing advice and ideal spots. No license is required for the Shannon but it is here you can purchase the license for the River Suck and canals. Have a pint of the local beer, Bo Bristle and if you are spending the night sample the fine cuisine in Flynn’s Bar & Restaurant or The Brosna Lodge or if you want fish & chips call to the Van House for some tasty dishes just at the marina. Enjoy the Irish session and craic in Hough’s pub which is definitely worth a visit
Cruise northwards and stop off at Shannonbridge, this is a great location for fishing as you can fish from the boat or hire a dinghy and outboard motor with your cruiser and explore the hidden warm waters or if you have a fishing license take a trip on the River suck which is a fisherman’s paradise. Take a break, grab some pub food in Luker’s or Killeen’s while enjoying a pint of Guinness and chatting to the locals. If you run short of fishing supplies, don’t worry Killeen’s shop have an endless supply and will definitely provide you with recommended fishing spotd. There is plenty of evening entertainment available in Shannonbridge to finish the evening off. Before continuing northwards there is also the possibility to cruise along the idyllic River Suck to Ballinasloe, as mentioned previously a great river for fishing but make sure you have the appropriate license. It hosts the oldest horse fair which takes place in October and is an old market town and has plenty of opportunity to shop and visit the pubs & restaurants. Continuing back down the River Suck and upstream it will be the famous world heritage site of Clonmacnoise another great location for fishing and plenty of open space to pop that fish on the BBQ.
Hop back on board and cruise to Athlone, this is where you will have your first experience of a lock. But no need to worry as the all the locks on the Shannon are operated by lock keepers so always there to lend a hand. Athlone is a great town with plenty of choice of great pubs &restaurants. Sean’s bar, the oldest pub in Ireland is conveniently located beside the lock so pop in for a drink and enjoy the evening entertainment.
Now it’s time to replace the fishing rods with the golf clubs and cruise to the lower end of Lough Ree where you will find Hodson Bay, the golf course is only within walking distance to the marina and you can finish off the evening with some food in the Hotel overlooking the harbour. On the other side of the lake , is the spectacular Glasson Hotel & Golf Club , a picturesque golf club overlooking the lake and there is a marina located at the 18th hole , a wonderful place for a round of golf and fine cuisine. Try out their driving range or finish off the evening with a great steak at the renowned Chalet Restaurant in Killinure. There are plenty of other golf courses available along the Shannon if you are fortunate enough to have more time.
It will be here that you begin your journey back to our marina, exploring the wonderful landscape and meandering River that will lead you back to Banagher.
