Ideas For Heading North…

As you leave the Marina in Banagher, heading North, the next town on the way is Shannonbridge. The peat bogs which surround the village are home to an abundance of flora and fauna, and is preserved as a natural habitat to the now rare corncrake. Also along the river are eskers, which are winding ridges of raised ground caused by melting ice during the Ice Age and were used by early settlers to cross the river. Look out for Napoleonic fortifications overlooking the bridge – and if you are interested you can stop off and take the self guided tour of ‘The Fort’.

The next town in Athlone and as you float past you can’t fail but to be impressed by Athlone Castle built by King John of England in Anglo Norman times. If you have time and feel inclined why not moor and step off the boat and explore this historic landmark rich in heritage.

Past Athlone is Lough Ree and Glasson, a beautiful village known as ‘the village of the roses’. Here at Hodson Bay you can moor your boat and pop ashore in the Hodson Bay Hotel. You can also moor your boat at the villages of Portrunny and Lecarrow while traversing the lake.

Ideas For Heading South

Explore one of Ireland’s historic wonders, the ‘Holy Island of Lough Derg’ (Inis Cealtra), on the Western shore of Lough Derg and appreciate this extraordinary monastic settlement. With the ruins of no fewer than six churches on this tiny island, its easy to see where this island got its name. For an expert’s insight, seek out local historian, Ger Madden. His tours from Mountshannon bring this ancient monastic settlement back to life. And look out for the white-tailed eagles, Saoirse and Caimin and their chicks, who have nested in the area.

Looking To Make A Splash?

Make a splash at Aqua Park  on the shores of Lough Derg in Dromineer which offers a full range of water activities from its inflatable water park to SUP Paddleboards, Banana Boats and kayaks for hire. Or motor on to Bay Sports at Hodson Bay which is renowned as having  Ireland’s  largest inflatable water park.
